Perhaps something technological, rather than magical. Someone explained to me that they tell when someone has left because...disappear from the phones. You can't call them anymore.

Perhaps something that...monitors that. We'd have to add people who've already ourselves, but after that it could be somewhat...self-sustaining. People could even use it as a reference.
